Buying a server is a five-to-seven-year decision. The right choice depends less on the fastest processor and more on where the server will live, what it will run and how it will be supported. Here's how we approach it with clients.
1. Start with the workload, not the model
List what the server will run: file sharing, an ERP or accounting system, a database, virtual machines, backup, or AI and analytics. Note the number of users and how much the data grows each year. This determines processor cores, memory and storage far better than any spec sheet.
2. Tower, rack or modular?
| Form factor | Best for | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Tower | Small offices and branches without a server rack | Quiet, simple, but takes floor space and is harder to scale |
| Rack | Server rooms and data centres | Dense and easy to expand; needs a rack, cooling and power planning |
| Modular / blade | Large virtualised estates | Shared power, cooling and networking; higher entry cost |
3. Size memory and storage for growth
- Memory: virtualisation and databases are usually memory-bound. Leave empty slots so you can add memory later rather than replace modules.
- Storage: choose SSDs for databases and virtual machines, and larger drives for file and backup data. Use a hardware RAID controller with protection that matches the risk (RAID 1 or 10 for performance, RAID 5 or 6 for capacity).
- Growth: plan for three to five years of data growth, not just today's size.
4. Don't skip resilience
Dual power supplies, redundant fans, a remote management controller (iDRAC) and the right warranty level (for example next-business-day on-site, or ProSupport for critical systems) matter more than a small processor upgrade.
5. Plan the backup before you buy
Every server needs a tested backup — ideally a local copy for quick restores and an off-site or cloud copy for disasters. See our storage and backup services.
