Dell distributor, partner or reseller: who should you buy from in India?

Every month thousands of businesses in India search for a “Dell distributor in Delhi” or a “Dell authorised dealer”. Most of them don't actually need a distributor. Here is how Dell's sales channel works, and who you should buy from.

How Dell sells in India

Dell sells to businesses in two main ways: directly, and through its partner channel. The channel has two layers:

• Distributors hold stock and credit lines, and sell to partners and resellers. They rarely sell to end customers.
• Partners and resellers — such as Dell Registered Partners — buy through that authorised channel and sell to businesses, adding configuration, installation, financing and support.

So when a business searches for a “Dell distributor”, it usually wants what a registered partner provides: genuine products, a GST invoice, the right configuration and someone to call after delivery.

What to check before you buy

1. Partner status. Ask whether the seller is a Dell partner and how products are sourced. Genuine products come through Dell's authorised channel.
2. Warranty. Confirm the service tag is registered to your company and the warranty period and level (for example next-business-day on-site) match what you're paying for.
3. Configuration. For servers and workstations, the wrong RAID controller, memory layout or power supply can cost more than the price difference between sellers. A good partner sizes the configuration to your workload.
4. GST invoice and delivery terms. Make sure the quote shows taxes, delivery location and timelines clearly.
5. After-sales support. Who installs it, who handles a warranty claim, and is an AMC available when the warranty ends?

When buying from a partner makes most sense

• You need servers or storage configured for a specific workload.
• You're rolling out laptops or desktops in bulk and want imaging, asset tagging and staggered delivery.
• You want installation, migration and ongoing support from one team.
• You operate from several cities and want one supplier across India.
